Imagine: A Free Education

    Video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHKtCOjZBio

It is crazy to think about how a few events can change your life and academic career. Not such as much of a physical change but also a mental change, or eye opener. I was born into the small town of Ludlow Pennsylvania with a population of under 300. I lived in the typical middle class family very happy in my days growing up as a child with my 2 brothers. I never asked for much and was given the world. It seemed like we had no problem growing up the family was stable throughout my childhood. As the years went by I understood at a young age that life wasn’t as easy as I thought as a child. I would start to sense the struggle my father and mother started to go through in my early teens and try to understand why it was hard to keep everything afloat when both my parents were making money.

One day reality entered my life when my parents split up and my mother and my two brothers had to move out to the town of Kane which was 9 miles from Ludlow. It wasn’t hard making the adjustment at first it was just going to the same school as before just living at a different place. But as a few months went by my mother was unable to make payments by herself. At that point my father wouldn’t help much financially because he was unable to work at the time; so my mother was stuck making all the payments off her own salary. As my high school years went by every month seemed like a struggle and I knew I would have to work right out of high school to help support my family because college was out of the question at that point.

Then I set my sights on football because I saw that as my ticket to college for free if I were to get any kind of scholarship. I worked hard to reach that goal but it wasn’t good enough. I waited until the end of my senior year and still no offers were available to me. So when I graduated I set my sights on a job because I couldn’t leave my family behind when I still had a younger brother going through school and my mother struggling to keep the family upright. I found a part time job which paid minimum wage I worked about 7 hours a day 5 days a week and my older brother found a job as well. At that point the family was pretty stable we got by rather well.

After 2 years of working I finally set my eyes to a college education. When I began college my freshman year, financial aid did not cover what was needed of my college debts because they took my father's,my mother's, my bother's and my income and summed it up. All the money I have saved up while supporting my family had to go to the school to keep my education going and still I had money that was due. My mother had to pitch in and assist me with my debt when I knew she alone had trouble just getting by. So there I was in school with no money to my name all the work I put into saving up for school was no longer there and I had a struggling family back home. This is now my 3rd year of school and really I’m not sure how I have made it this far. Every year seems like a struggle to pay off my debts to the school and I wonder if I’m going to be able to afford the next.

Is there an answer to all the struggling families that want to send their children to school? We live in a society in which, when it comes to education, school is in reach for those who can afford it; those who are lucky enough to have the wealth to send their children to school. With school funding being cut each year and the middle class slowly getting poorer, it makes me wonder how some of these families will be able to send their children to school without struggling anymore then they should. Imagine going through college and walking across stage without worrying how you are going to pay back the ridiculous amount of money that it costs to attend a higher education. Imagine growing up and sending your children to school without worrying about the debt that is soon to be. In a country in which the middle class is fading fast to the poor regions, wouldn’t it make sense to provide free higher education to all? Instead of having families relying on welfare systems, they could rely on a higher education to support themselves and their loved ones instead of hesitating to make the move to college because of the cost.

This is not a “poor me” essay. There are many other families far worse off than mine is I understand that; but imagine a country that can have people from different classes attending school and have no worries about debt. A society in which to get an education doesn’t require having a well financed family but merely requires dedication and hard work for anyone who wishes to attend. That would lift stress of the shoulders of many college students and families including my own. But for now I have to focus on my schooling because the cost of my education is too much for me to fail and there is no going back. There is no turning back now. I cannot afford to lose.

The website i found is a great source of lesson plans and ideas to provide to my future classroom. The page is split up into 3 different sections; grades k-5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12. Under each section there are 4 subjects to chose from which are math, English, social studies, and science. I clicked on the English section and 459 different lesson plans were available for me to observe. Of course i didn't look at them all i just observed a few and found that the lesson plans are set up rather professionally. Under the subject section is a link that says lesson plan which will take you to a browsing section where you can search for lesson plans by grade level and subject. I tried grades K-5 with the subject of social studies and 34 options of lesson plans came up.
With the numerous amount of lesson plans on this website, there are many ideas that can be pulled out of these lessons to put in your own lessons in your future classroom. I believe that there are numerous amounts of lessons and ideas on the Internet that can be used and this tool is one that i plan on using to get ideas for my lessons in the future.

Bullying -- a BIG Problem

Bullying is a bigger problem than many college students may not realize. This problem will continue to escalade if students in this age are not educated about how to take action on this particular issue. This class is about how we can use technology in our classroom to enhance education but as technology advances, there are more ways that bullying and harassment can be done. Therefore, if we are to use networking and technology in our classrooms it is important for us as educators to not only learn the technology but also teach our students the proper and improper ways that this technology can be used.

Now that students are begining to own things such as cell phones and have facebook accounts at young ages, schools should be educating students at a young age about bullying and bullying with technology. I believe that if we educate children at a younger age about bullying and the aftermath that it can cause, then it will put a big dent in the bullying problem that is in our school systems. I am not saying this will erase the problem, but it will help the students with realizing the consequenses of bullying and knowing the signs of these acts so they know what to do to handle these situations.

Here is a great video on the bullying problem in our schools

The reason I chose this topic is because when i was young I was bullied often in my elementary years and as i got older i became a bully in high school. I have experianced both sides of the spectrum in my childhood and neither i feel good about. When I was bullied i felt like i had to do the same to other people to gain a good social status with my peers. By educating students at a young age, such as kindergarten, i believe that students will have a better understanding of what problems can arrise from bullying. As an early childhood educator, i know that the most important years of education for a student are the first 5-6 years so if we attack the bullying problem then, it will hopefully reduce the bullying.

Here is a site which covers the different age groups of bullying

In Class Talk Review

I liked the discussion the class today. Its was very interesting listening to the different points of view other students had about how technology is changing us socialy. I honestly am with most of the class because i do believe that online sites like facebook are causing our society to slowly creep into different social interactions. I do beleive that it would be good for teachers to keep up with the recent technology but im not a fan of it becoming a part of the education system.

Readers Response

I have recently read the first chapter in our PERSONAL LEARNING NETORKS book and the chapter brought up the fact that it would be better for education if schools changed to personal learning networks which are "rich sets of connections each of us can make to people in both our online and offline worlds who can help us with our learning pursuits". In other words the author is suggesting that schools change to online networking to access an infanant amount of knowledge from the online networks. My view on these ideas are mixed. Sure the idea of students having unlimited access to the networks sounds like great idea, but the book does not state the downfalls of this idea.
The first problem that popped into my head was; how will schools afford to make these changes? Some schools now are struggling with funds and trying to keep their head above water to keep the education pool going. And if the schools decide to change to this kind of system it will more than likely be expensive and with that kind of expense to change the system, it might cost families extra money just to have their child go to school. The second problem that came to me is that i believe that if we were to change to this kind of system, the schools will be to dependant on networks and technology. Back when i was in high school, sometimes when i had computer classes, the computers in the computer labs would not work or the schools network would be down for sometime. So what if we do switch to this system then something happens such as a power outage or the networks are down for the day; then there would be a sugnificant amount of time wasted in that school day. I believe that schools need to stay the same but the idea of online networking is a good idea in some cases.
If we were to mildly change our system to the point where we use networking/computers for a portion of the day while still maintaining the way we teach now, then i believe that system would work fine. I just dont believe that we should completely rely on networking to educate our youth in this country. Schools need to go with the flow with technology like today, smartbaords are filling classrooms around our country because its the new way of teaching.
In concusion I do think that Personal Learning Networks does sound like a good idea but it is not worth toying or changing the system we have now. I believe that using networking should be limited in schools and should not be used as a whole learning system because of the expenses and risks of changing the system.
